Description
James G. Blaine served was an American politician that served as a Congressional representative from 1863-76, Senator from 1877-1881 and Secretary of State under President Garfield in 1881. In 1884 Blaine was nominated as the Presidential candidate of the Republican Party. However, Blaine’s reputation was largely tainted by accusations of having accepted bribes from the Rock & Fort Smith and the Northern Pacific railways in the late 1870s. In the cartoon below Blaine is depicted seated surrounded by the bonds and shares that he received in his dealings with the railroads.
